Turns Out We Like Morals

CNN.com story.

Seems that movies containing serious sex don't do well. They do badly at the cox office thought they tend to be highly reviewed.
The old adage "sex sells" no longer applies to the movies. "Sex will not make something that is otherwise not entertaining sell," producer Tom Pollock says. "Movies work because they make you laugh, cry or (be) scared. Audiences won't go to a movie because of sex."

Ofcoarse, the trade off is that funny sex still does well in films such as "There's Somthing About Mary," and "Road Trip." I suppose that this is becuse we watch these movies and rationalize it by saying, "well I'm watch it because it's funny. It just happens to have some naked college girls in it."

But the bad news is that we are watching sex at home now. T.V. is full of racy stuff, not to mention the internet. Nothing ever changes. It just moves somewhere else.

"We are a Puritan society," Press says. "We'd rather watch it at home."

Yes, that is the subtext...if there's any "sub" to it. It's pretty overt.

honestly I dont mind seeing a body part here or there. But I really dont care to watch two people go after each other humping like wild gorillas. I just dont think of it as a spectators sport. Yes occassionally there are scenes that make it funny. But I generally only laugh the first time or two I see it...

Yeah. If sex belongs in the scvript, Okay. But please do it tastefully. For instance, in "Love Actually" (the sex scene stand in scenes) is acceptable. It plays off a wonderful irony. Here these people atre invol;ved in a incredibly intimate actr, yet they don't even know each other. They are naked in a room full of many people (not to mention the scores who will see the film) but they are very shy with each other. Very funny and tasteful.

I think that sex can have a place in film, but it should not (as it usually is) be there for its own sake. If it is necessary for the plot, okay, but if you're just sticking it in (no pun intended) to get audiences to pay to see the actress naked, please don't bother.
